Thunder Move Within One Win of NBA Finals After Game 5 Victory Over Spurs

Posted : 27 May 2026

Oklahoma City Thunder moved to the brink of another NBA Finals appearance after defeating the San Antonio Spurs 127-114 in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals on Tuesday night.

League MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander delivered another standout performance with 32 points, while veteran guard Alex Caruso provided a major boost off the bench with 22 points. The defending champions now hold a 3-2 series advantage and are one victory away from returning to the NBA Finals.

With both Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell unavailable, rookie Jared McCain stepped into the starting lineup and impressed with 20 points in his first playoff start. Chet Holmgren added 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Isaiah Hartenstein controlled the paint with 12 points and 15 rebounds.

Oklahoma City responded strongly after managing only 82 points in Game 4. This time, the Thunder reached that total early in the third quarter and maintained control for most of the contest. Head coach Mark Daigneault praised his team’s response following the previous defeat, highlighting the squad’s ability to quickly learn from setbacks during the playoff run.

The Thunder also received key defensive contributions throughout the game. Hartenstein limited Victor Wembanyama to difficult shooting opportunities, with the Spurs star finishing with 20 points on 4-of-15 shooting.

San Antonio remained competitive through strong performances from Stephon Castle, who scored 24 points, and Julian Champagnie, who added 22. However, the Spurs struggled from long range, missing 29 of their 41 attempts from three-point range.

A controversial sequence late in the third quarter frustrated San Antonio after a disputed out-of-bounds decision and a missed goaltending call. Spurs coach Mitch Johnson received a technical foul while attempting to challenge one of the decisions.

Gilgeous-Alexander was particularly effective at the free-throw line, converting 16 of his 17 attempts to finish with a playoff career-high in free throw attempts.

Game 6 will take place in San Antonio on Thursday, where the Spurs must win to force a deciding Game 7. Meanwhile, the New York Knicks await the winner after securing their place in the NBA Finals.
