The Oklahoma City Thunder made a commanding start to their Conference semi-final series, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers 108-90 to take a 1-0 lead. Playing on home court, the reigning champions and Western Conference top seed delivered a composed and efficient performance to seize early control of the best-of-seven matchup.
Oklahoma City impressed on both ends of the floor, combining a well-distributed scoring effort with a disciplined defensive display that limited the Lakers to their lowest playoff points total since 2021. Chet Holmgren led the way with 24 points and 12 rebounds, while MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Ajay Mitchell each contributed 18 points.
For the Lakers, LeBron James finished as the game’s top scorer with 27 points, but his efforts were not enough to close the gap. Head coach JJ Redick acknowledged that mistakes proved costly against such a strong opponent, stressing the need for improvement heading into the next game.
The Lakers were also without Luka Dončić, who continues to recover from a hamstring injury and may miss Game 2 on Thursday, further complicating their challenge.
In the Eastern Conference, the Detroit Pistons opened their series with a 111-101 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Cade Cunningham led Detroit with 23 points, supported by Tobias Harris with 20.
Despite a late push from Cleveland, Donovan Mitchell matched Cunningham with 23 points, while James Harden added 22 but struggled with seven turnovers as the Cavaliers fell short.
