The Remarkable Evolution of Basketball Africa League Scoring Trends From 2021 to 2026

Posted : 18 June 2026

The Basketball Africa League has witnessed an extraordinary surge in offensive production since its inaugural season. This clear upward trajectory in scoring patterns reached a historic peak during the recently concluded 2026 campaign. By the time the RSSB Tigers secured their dramatic championship victory, the continental league had completed 234 total games since its 2021 inception.

When the tournament debuted under strict health restrictions in 2021, the twelve participating teams played 26 total games in Kigali. Teams struggled to find their rhythm early on, which resulted in a modest combined average of 153 points per game. However, defensive schemes quickly faced tougher challenges as players adjusted to the tournament intensity.

The 2022 edition saw the calendar expand significantly to 38 games across multiple African host cities. This longer schedule allowed teams to establish better offensive chemistry, pushing the scoring average up to 160 points per game. Although the 2023 season experienced a slight dip to 155 points, the league quickly recovered.

Offensive dominance returned during the 2024 campaign when the schedule grew to 42 games. Teams adapted efficiently to the intense competition by averaging 159 points per game on the court. The scoring explosion continued into 2025 as a 48-game calendar helped teams surpass the 160-point milestone.

The groundbreaking 2026 season officially shattered all previous scoring marks by averaging an astonishing 169 points per game. Fans witnessed an unprecedented eleven games where teams crossed the 100-point threshold. Furthermore, intense tactical battles pushed eleven separate matches into dramatic overtime periods.

Several historic single-game team records also fell during this remarkable offensive era. Al Ahly Ly defeated Dar City 118–97 to create the highest-scoring match in league history with 215 combined points. This feat eclipsed the 2025 record when APR defeated Al Ittihad Alexandria in a 213-point thriller.

Individual players have raised the competitive bar by delivering jaw-dropping scoring performances. Terrell Stoglin and Will Perry set early benchmarks by recording 41 points in single games. Jo Lual-Acuil later pushed the record to 42 points before Craig Randall II scored a historic 54 points in 2026.

Even the championship games reflect this massive evolution in competitive balance and offensive capability. Prior to the 2026 final, every single title match had been decided by a double-digit margin. However, the RSSB Tigers secured a thrilling 90–88 victory over Petro de Luanda to record the closest final in history.
