The Golden State Warriors are set for a major coaching shake-up as longtime head coach Steve Kerr begins restructuring his staff ahead of the new season. Two of his top assistants, Terry Stotts and Jerry Stackhouse, are leaving the franchise after their contracts expired.
Stotts, who served as Kerr’s lead assistant and offensive coordinator for the past two seasons, has informed the organization that he will not return. The veteran coach, who previously spent nine seasons as head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, leaves on good terms and remains open to future NBA head coaching opportunities.
Stackhouse is also departing after two seasons with the Warriors, where he worked as defensive coordinator. Before joining Golden State, he spent five years as head coach of Vanderbilt University. League sources indicate he is also seeking head coaching opportunities elsewhere.
The Warriors’ coaching changes extend beyond Stotts and Stackhouse. Chris DeMarco left earlier in the year to take the head coaching job with the New York Liberty, while longtime assistant Kris Weems is expected to remain as part of the reshuffled staff.
Golden State is already exploring potential replacements, with former New Orleans Pelicans head coach Willie Green among the names linked to the role. Green previously worked under Kerr and maintains a strong relationship with the organization.
The changes come shortly after Kerr agreed to a new two-year contract following brief uncertainty about his future. The deal reportedly makes him the highest-paid coach in the NBA.
The Warriors are coming off a difficult season in which injuries contributed to a 37-win campaign and a missed playoff appearance. Team management has since signaled the need for significant adjustments both on the roster and within the coaching structure.
With the offseason underway, the franchise is expected to rebuild around star guard Stephen Curry while continuing to reshape the coaching staff in preparation for a stronger push next season.
