Steve Kerr Voices Concern Over NBA’s Condensed Schedule, Injury Risks

Posted : 19 November 2025

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has expressed serious concern about the NBA’s accelerated pace of play and condensed 82-game schedule, citing a surge in soft tissue injuries across the league.

In recent days, Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo suffered a groin strain, while the San Antonio Spurs reported that center Victor Wembanyama has a left calf strain and guard Stephon Castle is dealing with a hip flexor strain. Additionally, five other NBA players—Anthony Davis, Ty Jerome, Dylan Harper, Ja Morant, and Jrue Holiday—are currently sidelined with calf injuries.

Kerr pointed to the physical demands of the modern game as a key factor. “[The Warriors’ medical staff] believes that the wear and tear, the speed, the pace, the mileage is factoring into these injuries,” he said. According to ESPN Research, the league is currently playing at its fastest collective pace since the 1988-89 season. Players are covering an average of 34.3 miles per game at 4.43 mph, marking the longest distance and highest speed since tracking began in 2013-14.

Kerr has long advocated for shortening the NBA schedule from 82 games to 72 or fewer, arguing that additional rest and practice time would benefit players over a long season.

The Warriors are already navigating their fifth back-to-back series of the season, with games in Orlando and Miami to close out a six-game road trip. By the end of the Miami game, the team will have played 17 games in 29 days across 12 cities, the league-high for the month.

Despite his concerns, Kerr expressed doubt that the league will seriously consider reducing the schedule due to financial implications.
