Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry has expressed confidence in the integrity of the NBA despite a recent FBI investigation into illegal sports betting that has led to several high-profile arrests.
Among those implicated are Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups. Both men have denied any wrongdoing following indictments announced on Thursday.
Rozier, 31, is one of six individuals arrested over alleged betting irregularities, which include accusations that NBA players faked injuries to influence gambling markets.
The investigation has also revealed connections to mafia-linked poker games, raising broader concerns about the influence of gambling on American sports. Sports betting has been legal in most U.S. states since the Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act in 2018.
Curry, a two-time NBA Most Valuable Player, reassured fans that players are mindful of their responsibilities. His teammate Draymond Green echoed the sentiment, acknowledging the seriousness of the arrests but noting that partnering with gambling companies does not make gambling more accessible to players.
The investigation also involves former NBA player and coach Damon Jones and has identified seven NBA games between February 2023 and March 2024 as potentially affected. Rozier is alleged to have shared insider information and faked injuries to influence betting odds during a March 2023 match between the Charlotte Hornets and New Orleans Pelicans. Jones is linked to two games involving the Los Angeles Lakers in 2023 and 2024.
Billups faces separate charges connected to illegal poker games tied to organized crime, which include robbery, extortion, wire fraud, bank fraud, and illegal gambling. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame last year.
Both Rozier and Billups appeared in court Thursday and were placed on immediate leave from their NBA roles. Their respective teams have games scheduled despite the legal proceedings.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has called for stricter regulations surrounding gambling. Under Article 35 of the NBA Constitution, the commissioner has the authority to impose fines, suspensions, expulsions, or even permanent disqualification on players involved in any activity that undermines the integrity of the game, including wagering on NBA matches.
