Stephen Curry nears return as Warriors star completes full practice and live scrimmage

Posted : 31 March 2026

Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry has reached a vital turning point in his recovery from a lingering knee injury. The veteran point guard was a full participant in the team's practice on Tuesday, which marks his most significant step toward a return to action. Following the primary session, head coach Steve Kerr confirmed that Curry would engage in a live five-on-five scrimmage to test his fitness.

Curry has been sidelined for 25 consecutive games after suffering an injury on January 30. Medical evaluations revealed he was suffering from patellofemoral pain syndrome and bone bruising in his right knee. The recovery process has been difficult, with the medical staff previously halting his attempts to return to live contact drills during a recent trip to Atlanta.

The absence of the two-time MVP has heavily impacted the Warriors' standing in the Western Conference. Without their leader, the team has struggled to a 9-16 record over the last two months. This slide has seen Golden State drop from the eighth seed down to the 10th spot, putting their postseason aspirations in a precarious position.

Coach Steve Kerr noted that the Tuesday session was light but provided the necessary environment for Curry to work on both offensive and defensive drills. The final decision regarding his return to the lineup remains with Rick Celebrini, the Vice President of Player Health and Performance. The medical team will evaluate how Curry’s knee reacts to the intensity of the scrimmage before clearing him for game play.

The atmosphere at the Warriors' facility improved noticeably with Curry back on the floor. Forward Gui Santos mentioned that the team gains immense confidence just by having Curry present during drills. While the team has benefited from his leadership on the sidelines, Santos emphasized that his physical presence in the lineup is what the roster truly needs.

Kerr has stressed that Curry requires a proper "runway" to regain his game rhythm before competing in high-stakes NBA games. The staff is wary of rushing him back too soon given the delicate nature of bone bruising. If he remains asymptomatic following this latest workout, a return to the hardwood could be imminent.

The Warriors are currently fighting to stabilize their position in the play-in tournament bracket. Having Curry back for the final stretch of the regular season is considered essential for a deep playoff run. The team will provide further updates after assessing his condition on Wednesday morning.
