Spurs Outlast Pistons Behind Wembanyama and Vassell in Physical Showdown

Posted : 24 February 2026

The San Antonio Spurs showed resilience and skill in a physical contest against the Detroit Pistons, defeating the Eastern Conference leaders 114‑103 in a matchup that many saw as a potential NBA Finals preview.

Victor Wembanyama led the way with 21 points, 17 rebounds, and six blocks, while Devin Vassell added 28 points, including seven 3-pointers, as the Spurs relied on a balanced offensive effort to overcome a rough start. Wembanyama struggled with his shooting, hitting just 6-of-16, but his teammates stepped up, with three others scoring in double figures. Overall, San Antonio connected on 18 of 40 shots from beyond the arc.

Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff acknowledged the Spurs’ depth, noting that the team is not solely reliant on Wembanyama. “We know how talented Wemby is and how impactful he can be, but it's not a one-man show over there,” Bickerstaff said.

The Spurs extended their winning streak to a season-high nine games, sitting just behind the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference. Detroit, meanwhile, had won five straight games and will host Oklahoma City on Wednesday in another test against top-tier competition.

Cade Cunningham struggled against San Antonio’s defense, missing 21 of 26 shots and finishing with 16 points and 10 assists. Stephon Castle’s focused defense contributed to the Pistons’ difficulties against the Spurs’ perimeter scoring.

Tempers flared early in the game, with an altercation involving Cade Cunningham, Keldon Johnson, and Jalen Duren. Johnson and Duren were both assessed technical fouls in the second quarter. Duren had recently served a suspension, and the game featured the physical, “bully ball” style that Detroit is known for. Wembanyama said he appreciated the experience, calling the Pistons the team “most capable of playing that ball.”

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson praised his team’s composure, emphasizing their ability to withstand Detroit’s physical style. “They are going to test your toughness,” he said. “Detroit just toes the line. I don't think they cross it.”

With this victory, San Antonio demonstrated both their talent and grit, while Detroit continues to push toward playoff relevance for the first time since 2008.
