Basketball enthusiasts across Nigeria and three other African countries now have a major reason to celebrate. SportyTV has officially secured a three-year broadcast agreement with the National Basketball Association (NBA) to air selected games for free. The deal covers Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa, allowing fans to watch live matches without paying subscription fees.
This partnership ensures that fans can access content via traditional television, the SportyTV mobile app, and their digital platforms. Coverage has already commenced with the high-stakes Eastern Conference semi-final between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Detroit Pistons. For the current 2025/2026 postseason, the broadcaster will air eight playoff games and select NBA Finals matchups.
The long-term agreement extends through September 2028 and includes a robust programming schedule for future seasons. Viewers will have access to weekly NBA Saturday games and marquee Christmas Day fixtures. The package also features the NBA All-Star Game, play-in tournament matches, and comprehensive coverage of the playoffs.
Elias Gallego, Vice President at Sporty Group, emphasized the importance of accessibility in modern sports media. He noted that while content might be available elsewhere, this deal makes it truly accessible to everyone. Gallego stated that the platform is designed to meet the habits of today's viewers across smart TVs and mobile devices.
Beyond live action, the network will provide daily highlights to keep fans updated on league standings. Classic content featuring legendary players like Hakeem Olajuwon and Michael Jordan will also be part of the broadcast rotation. This allows younger fans to connect with the rich history of the sport and its African icons.
The rise of African stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Joel Embiid has fueled a massive surge in local basketball interest. This deal directly addresses that growing demand by removing financial barriers for the average viewer. It represents a significant shift in how premium international sports are consumed on the continent.
Nigeria’s media landscape continues to evolve as more free-to-air platforms compete for high-value international rights. With this move, SportyTV has positioned itself as a primary destination for basketball followers in the region. Fans can now look forward to following their favorite superstars like LeBron James and Luka Dončić regularly.
