Shai Gilgeous-Alexander took on an unusual role as a sideline supporter during a decisive stretch of the Oklahoma City Thunder’s 125-107 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 2 of their second-round playoff series.
The Thunder were trailing by five points when Gilgeous-Alexander picked up his fourth foul early in the third quarter, forcing the reigning MVP to sit out the remainder of the period. His absence, however, sparked a dominant team surge.
During that stretch, Oklahoma City went on a 22-4 run to flip the game in its favour, turning a deficit into a 13-point lead before Gilgeous-Alexander returned for the fourth quarter. That momentum proved crucial as the Thunder secured a 2-0 series advantage while remaining unbeaten in the postseason.
Gilgeous-Alexander, who finished with 22 points alongside Chet Holmgren, praised his teammates for stepping up when needed. He said the group has full trust in one another and believes anyone on the floor can contribute to winning basketball.
Oklahoma City’s success without its star guard highlighted the strength of its defensive system and roster depth. The team forced multiple turnovers during the run, converting them into easy points and tightening control of the game.
Guard Ajay Mitchell played a key role in managing the offense during the third quarter, scoring seven points in that span while also distributing the ball effectively. His composure stood out as he filled in a larger role during the playoff run.
Another major spark came from Jared McCain, who provided instant offence off the bench. He hit multiple three-pointers in quick succession, helping stretch the lead as Oklahoma City pulled away.
Holmgren also delivered a strong all-around performance, contributing across the board with points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks. His presence was especially impactful in the third quarter, where the Thunder extended their advantage significantly.
Although the Lakers briefly reduced the gap in the fourth quarter, Holmgren responded with timely scoring, including a three-pointer and key free throws that restored control for Oklahoma City.
Head coach Mark Daigneault praised his squad’s mentality, saying the players embrace challenges and consistently turn pressure situations into opportunities, a trait that has helped fuel their undefeated postseason run so far.
