Rwanda to Face Reigning Champions Nigeria in Women’s Afrobasket 2025 Opener

Posted : 02 July 2025

Hosts Rwanda will open their Women’s Afrobasket 2025 journey with a blockbuster clash against reigning champions Nigeria, as Group D action tips off at the Palais des Sports in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

Rwanda, Nigeria, and Mozambique have been drawn together in Group D of the prestigious continental championship. The match between the Rwandan side and Nigeria’s D’Tigress will serve as the curtain raiser of the tournament.

Nigeria, the current holders, are aiming for a fifth consecutive Afrobasket title, having won the trophy in 2017, 2019, 2021, and 2023. The West African side are widely regarded as favourites going into this year’s competition.

Rwanda, who hosted the previous edition in 2023, earned widespread praise after finishing fourth, their best ever performance at the event. That achievement secured them automatic qualification for this year’s tournament and elevated expectations at home and abroad.

Opening against a team of Nigeria’s calibre will be a major test, but it also offers Rwanda a chance to show their improvement and fight for a place in the knockout stages.

The 2025 Women’s Afrobasket will take place from July 26 to August 3, all games being staged at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan. Group winners will advance directly to the quarter finals, while second and third placed teams will battle it out in qualification playoffs.

Nigeria will be aiming to make an early statement in their title defence, while Rwanda look to build on recent progress and deliver a strong performance in front of a continental audience.

The opening clash between hosts Rwanda and champions Nigeria sets the stage for an exciting 2025 Women’s Afrobasket tournament in Ivory Coast. Both teams will look to make an early impact in Group D.
