Russell Westbrook Announces Retirement After 18 NBA Seasons

Posted : 13 August 2026

Russell Westbrook has announced his retirement from the NBA at the age of 37, bringing an end to an 18-season career that established him as one of the most productive point guards in league history. The nine-time All-Star confirmed his decision on social media with a farewell video narrated by actor Michael B. Jordan.

Westbrook entered the NBA as the fourth overall pick in the 2008 draft and spent his first 11 seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder. He played a central role alongside Kevin Durant and James Harden as Oklahoma City reached the 2012 NBA Finals, before later becoming the franchise's all-time leader in points, assists, rebounds and steals.

His most memorable individual campaign came in 2016-17, when Westbrook averaged 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists to win the NBA MVP award. He also recorded a league-record 42 triple-doubles that season, becoming the first player since Oscar Robertson to average a triple-double across an entire campaign.

Westbrook finishes his career with 209 regular-season triple-doubles, comfortably the most in NBA history. He also ranks fifth all-time in assists with 10,351 and 14th in scoring with 27,176 points, while joining LeBron James as the only players to reach at least 25,000 points and 10,000 assists.

After leaving Oklahoma City in 2019, Westbrook played for the Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Denver Nuggets and Sacramento Kings.

In his final season with Sacramento, he averaged 15.2 points, 6.7 assists and 5.4 rebounds, and reportedly had opportunities to continue his career before deciding to walk away.
