RSSB Tigers Tactician Henry Mwinuka Named 2026 Basketball Africa League Coach of the Year

Posted : 01 June 2026

RSSB Tigers head coach Henry Mwinuka has officially been named the 2026 Basketball Africa League (BAL) Coach of the Year. The prestigious individual accolade was announced at the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda. The presentation took place just before the third-place playoff game between Al Ahly Ly and Al Ahly SC.

The 50-year-old tactician enjoyed an exceptional campaign on the sidelines; he guided his team to a 6-2 record en route to the final. Under his leadership, the Tigers initially secured a dominant 4-1 record in the Kalahari Conference group phase. They then carried that momentum into the postseason to lift their first-ever continental championship trophy.

Mwinuka has made history as the first Tanzanian coach to claim this coveted individual honor. He is the fifth strategist to win the award since its introduction in 2022. He joins elite past winners like Jose Neto, Mamadou Pabi Gueye, Ogoh Odaudu, and Abou Chacra.

The veteran coach managed the intense pressure of playing on home soil with incredible tactical composure. He successfully guided the Tigers through a dramatic tournament climax; his squad notably overcame a 20-point deficit against Angolan powerhouse Petro de Luanda in the final. His defensive adjustments during the second half proved decisive in securing the narrow 90-88 victory.

Following the historic triumph, the humble strategist chose to dedicate the achievement entirely to his roster. Mwinuka stated that a coach is nothing without committed players; he praised their sacrifices and hard work. He also expressed gratitude to the local federation and the entire nation of Rwanda for their unwavering support.
