The RSSB Tigers advanced to the Basketball Africa League semifinals on Sunday night despite suffering a dramatic 99-98 second-leg defeat against Moroccan champions FUS Rabat. Rabat entered the decisive contest at the BK Arena needing a massive 23-point victory to overturn their first-leg loss.
The Moroccan side started strong and looked capable of a historic comeback after building an impressive 21-point lead during the first half. American guard Will Perry inspired the visitors with 29 points and 11 assists; he hit five three-pointers to keep the home team under constant pressure.
The Rwandan hosts mounted a furious second-half comeback and briefly claimed a six-point advantage in the final period. High-flying guard Craig Randall II carried the scoring load for the hosts; he racked up 43 points and drilled nine long-range shots.
Rabat fought back to reclaim the lead when Mouhamadou Diagne sank two late free throws to secure a consolation victory. Diagne finished the evening with 17 points and nine rebounds; his teammate Ilias Aqboub also contributed 17 points in the winning effort.
The result sets up a highly anticipated semifinal clash between the RSSB Tigers and Egyptian giants Al Ahly SC. FUS Rabat coach Abdelkarim El Haoua praised his squad but lamented recent player health issues that derailed their championship campaign.
Tigers star Antino Jackson Jr. shifted focus to their next opponents; he thanked the home fans for providing an incredible atmosphere throughout the tournament. The Kigali-based franchise will now enjoy three rest days before taking on Al Ahly on Wednesday, May 27.
