Rockets Stun Lakers in Game 5 to Keep Playoff Hopes Alive in Dramatic Comeback Win

The Houston Rockets responded under pressure to secure a crucial 99-93 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 5 of their first-round playoff series. The win prevented elimination and cut the Lakers’ series lead to 3-2, keeping Houston’s postseason hopes alive.

The Rockets had been in a similar late-game situation earlier in the series but collapsed due to costly turnovers. This time, however, they managed to close out the game, showing composure in the final minute to avoid another heartbreaking finish.

Jabari Smith Jr. and Reed Sheppard played key roles in the turnaround, bouncing back from previous mistakes with confident performances in the closing stages. Smith led the team with 22 points, while Sheppard added 12 points, six assists, and a crucial defensive play on LeBron James that helped seal momentum.

Head coach Ime Udoka praised his team’s resilience, pointing to their ability to learn from earlier errors in the series. He said the group showed clear growth and improved discipline after previously letting late leads slip away.

Despite missing key contributions from Kevin Durant for most of the series due to injury, Houston has remained competitive throughout, even outscoring Los Angeles across the five games. The Rockets have now become only the 16th team in NBA history to force a Game 6 after trailing 3-0 in a series.

Lakers star LeBron James led his team with 25 points but acknowledged the need for better execution ahead of the next game. He highlighted turnovers and unforced errors as key issues that allowed Houston to stay alive in the series.

The series now shifts back with the Rockets carrying renewed confidence, while the Lakers look to regroup and close it out in Game 6.
