Rockets Secure Tari Eason with Fully Guaranteed Five-Year Contract

Posted : 03 July 2026

The Houston Rockets have strengthened their young core by agreeing to a fully guaranteed five-year, $81.5 million contract with restricted free agent Tari Eason. The new deal keeps the versatile forward in Houston after the franchise exercised its right to retain him following the expiration of his rookie contract. Reports indicate the agreement also includes a player option in the fifth season.

Eason, who was selected 17th overall in the 2022 NBA Draft, has steadily developed into one of the Rockets' most reliable two-way players. Despite injury concerns that limited him during his second NBA season, the 25-year-old bounced back to enjoy the most productive campaign of his career in 2025-26. He averaged 10.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.2 steals across 60 regular-season games, making a career-high 34 starts.

The contract represents a successful conclusion to negotiations that previously stalled before last season. Houston and Eason were unable to reach an extension before the October deadline, sending him into the year as a restricted free agent. While the Rockets had made a substantial offer during those talks, the two sides reportedly differed over the amount of guaranteed money included in the agreement.

Eason strengthened his bargaining position with an impressive playoff performance. He elevated his production during Houston's postseason run, averaging 13.8 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 2.5 steals per game while shooting efficiently from the field. His defensive intensity and versatility continued to make him one of the team's most valuable wing defenders.

The forward earned $5.7 million during the final season of his rookie contract, but his new agreement reflects the Rockets' belief that he can remain a cornerstone of their long-term plans. Since entering the league, Eason has appeared in 221 regular-season games, compiling career averages of 10.4 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals per contest.

Retaining Eason provides continuity for a Houston team intent on building around its emerging core. The Rockets have prioritized keeping their young talent together, and the new contract ensures one of their most effective defenders and rebounders will remain an important part of the franchise's future.
