River Hoopers Start BAL 2025 Campaign on Shaky Note

Nigeria’s representative at the 2025 Basketball Africa League (BAL), Rivers Hoopers, began their campaign on a shaky note with a disappointing loss to former champions US Monastir.

The BAL playoffs tipped off on Saturday evening at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria, but it was a rough start for the Kingsmen, who fell 89-81 despite a promising first-half performance.

Rivers Hoopers came out strong, taking a 36-32 lead into halftime. Their ball movement and defensive hustle kept the Tunisians on the back foot. However, they couldn’t sustain the momentum after the break.

US Monastir returned with renewed intensity in the second half, dominating the final two quarters to overturn the deficit and claim an 8-point win.

The result leaves Rivers Hoopers needing a quick turnaround ahead of their quarterfinal clash against Rwanda’s APR, scheduled for Monday.

The Nigerian side will need a win to stay in contention and prove their mettle among Africa’s elite clubs.
