Basketball action took centre stage in Ikeja Federal Constituency as the inaugural Renewed Hope Basketball Championship officially kicked off at the Police College Court, Lagos. A total of 18 teams representing the constituency’s wards are set to compete for honours in this community-based tournament.
The championship is powered by Olawale Fadare, Special Assistant on General Duties to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in collaboration with Young Professionals for Tinubu (YP4T). Organisers explained that the initiative is designed to promote youth empowerment and encourage productivity through sports at a critical moment in the nation’s social development.
During the jersey distribution ceremony, Hon. Francis Nkwo, Leader of the House, Onigbongbo LCDA, urged athletes to maintain discipline and embrace fair play throughout the competition.
Tournament Coordinator Comrade Kenneth Agba assured participants and fans of a well-organised event and expressed optimism that it would serve as a pathway to greater opportunities for young basketball talents in the area.
The stakes are high, with the top four teams set to receive ₦500,000, ₦300,000, ₦200,000, and ₦100,000 respectively. Each of the remaining 14 teams will also receive ₦50,000 to recognise their participation.
Competing teams include Ebun Comets, Hoops & Read, Police Baton, Heat Kings, Bobcats, Raptors, Senators, Lite Academy, Warriors, Warlords, Estate King, Rookies B, Ogudu GRA, WASCOM, Rookies, Sport Nation, and Leo Kareem Academy.
Running from November 24 to 30, the championship promises more than just basketball. Fans can enjoy side attractions such as the Slam Dunk Contest, 3-Point Shootout, music and DJ sessions, dance performances, youth talent showcases, giveaways, and a raffle draw. Organisers emphasised that the event aims to leave a lasting impact both on and off the court.
