Rena Wakama, Head Coach of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has joined the team’s training camp in Abuja as preparations continue for the upcoming 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship in Côte d'Ivoire.
It will be recalled that in 2023, Wakama made history by becoming the first female head coach to lead a Nigerian basketball team to a continental title, guiding D’Tigress to their fourth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title.
Under her leadership, D’Tigress also became the first African team, male or female, to reach the quarterfinals of basketball at the 2024 Paris Olympics, a milestone that earned her FIBA’s Best Coach Award.
Currently, no fewer than 14 players have reported to the Abuja camp ahead of the AfroBasket tournament, which is scheduled to take place in Abidjan from July 26 to August 3, 2025. Additional players are expected to join the squad in the coming days.
The current roster includes:
Solape Amusan, Olawuyi Adenike, Murja Musa, Amy Okonkwo, Nicole Enabosi, Victoria Macaulay, Vera Ojenuwa, Elizabeth Balogun, Abiodun Damilare,
Blessing Ejiofor, Ifunaya Okoro, Abiodun Yusuf, Pallas Kunaiyi, and team leader Ezinne Kalu.
Preparations continue as the team eyes another historic performance in Côte d'Ivoire.
