Rena Wakama Heads To Berlin As D’Tigress Prepare For World Cup

D’Tigress head coach Rena Wakama is on her way to Berlin, Germany, to join Nigeria’s women’s national basketball team ahead of the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup. Her arrival comes as the African champions enter the final stage of preparations for the global tournament.

Wakama had remained in the United States because of her coaching responsibilities with the Chicago Sky. She serves as an assistant coach under Tyler Marsh, a role she continues to hold alongside her position as Nigeria’s national team head coach.

Her return is expected to strengthen D’Tigress as they prepare for their opening World Cup fixture in Berlin. Nigeria will begin its campaign on September 4 against South Korea before facing France and Hungary in Group B.

D’Tigress have followed an extensive preparation programme ahead of the tournament. The team held a training camp in Chicago before travelling to China for a three-game exhibition series, where Nigeria recorded one victory and two defeats.

Nigeria then continued preparations in Spain. The team suffered heavy defeats against Spain and Belgium after closing the China tour with an encouraging 88-77 victory over the hosts in Foshan.

The 90-55 loss to Belgium and an 83-58 defeat to Spain highlighted areas that require improvement before the World Cup. Defensive organisation and offensive consistency will be among the key issues for Wakama and her coaching staff to address.

Wakama has been central to the recent rise of Nigerian women's basketball. She guided D’Tigress to the 2023 Women's AfroBasket title and later led the team to the quarter-finals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where Nigeria became the first African team to reach the Olympic women's basketball quarter-finals. She was subsequently named FIBA's 2024 Women's Basketball Coach of the Year.

Her presence in Berlin gives the team an opportunity to reconnect with its head coach before the competition begins. D’Tigress will need to quickly turn their preparation lessons into a strong tactical plan as they face three challenging opponents in Group B.
