Pistons break 28-game losing streak in thrilling victory over Raptors

Posted : 31 December 2023

The Detroit Pistons successfully avoided an unwelcome place in history by ending their 28-match losing streak with a hard-fought victory over the Toronto Raptors. Cade Cunningham emerged as a standout performer, contributing 30 points and 12 assists, steering the Pistons to a narrow 129-127 win.

This triumph marked the Pistons' first victory in the NBA since October 28, preventing them from equaling the longest losing streak in NBA history. An additional loss would have matched the longest losing streak in major US professional sports history, a record currently held by the NFL's Chicago Cardinals (now the Arizona Cardinals), who endured 29 successive losses between 1942 and 1945.

In the pivotal match, Bojan Bogdanovic notched 19 points for the Pistons, complemented by Jalen Duran's impressive performance with 18 points and 17 rebounds. Kevin Knox II also made a substantial contribution with 17 points.

Cade Cunningham expressed his satisfaction, emphasizing the team's resilience throughout the challenging period, stating, "It's been weighing on us heavy everywhere we go for two months, which is unreal." Cunningham highlighted the team's commitment, positivity, and determination to move forward, marking a crucial turning point for the Pistons.

LeBron James, celebrating his 39th birthday, faced disappointment as the Los Angeles Lakers fell 108-106 to the Minnesota Timberwolves. James, who scored 26 points, witnessed a standout performance from the Timberwolves' Anthony Edwards, who contributed 31 points in 38 minutes.

Meanwhile, in Indianapolis, Tyrese Haliburton made history by becoming the first player in 33 years to score at least 20 points and 20 assists in consecutive games. His remarkable 22 points and 23 assists led the Indiana Pacers to a convincing 140-126 victory over the New York Knicks, joining the elite ranks of Magic Johnson and John Stockton.

Across the league, Luka Doncic guided the Dallas Mavericks to a 132-122 victory over Stephen Curry's Golden State Warriors. Additional wins were secured by the Chicago Bulls and Utah Jazz, rounding out a dynamic day of NBA action.
