Philadelphia 76ers Begin Search for New GM After Daryl Morey Exit

Posted : 15 May 2026

The Philadelphia 76ers have begun their search for a new general manager after parting ways with Daryl Morey following a six-season tenure that ended without a deep playoff run.

Morey led the team to the postseason five times but never advanced beyond the second round, with this year’s campaign ending in a sweep at the hands of the New York Knicks. The franchise is now seeking a “fresh start” as it aims to build a championship-calibre structure around its core roster.

Former Golden State Warriors executive Bob Myers is overseeing the hiring process and emphasized that Philadelphia is committed to winning at the highest level. He stressed that the next general manager must adopt a collaborative approach and work closely with the wider organization.

Myers, who helped guide the Warriors to four NBA titles, said success in Philadelphia will depend on alignment across all decision-makers. He added that the ideal candidate must bring strong leadership, character, and a willingness to work as part of a unified group.

Managing partner Josh Harris expressed disappointment with the team’s recent performance and admitted that expectations have not been met. He also defended past roster decisions, including trades that were part of a broader long-term plan, while acknowledging uncertainty around their outcomes.

The franchise is built around stars such as Joel Embiid, Paul George, and rising guard Tyrese Maxey, but injuries and availability issues have limited consistency. Myers noted that depth and durability are now more important than ever in building a title contender.

Despite the front-office change, the organization confirmed that head coach Nick Nurse will remain in charge for next season. Harris also reiterated that the team is willing to operate in the luxury tax if necessary to improve the roster.

The 76ers aim to complete the hiring process before the NBA Draft, though Myers stressed that the search will not be rushed. The priority, he said, is finding the right leader who understands that winning a championship requires collective effort rather than individual control.
