Petro de Luanda Overcome Deficit to Secure Sixth Consecutive BAL Semifinal Berth

Posted : 26 May 2026

Defending champions Petro de Luanda of Angola overturned an eight-point first-leg deficit to defeat Tanzania's Dar City 83-69 at the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda. The emphatic second-leg victory secured their place in the Basketball Africa League (BAL) semifinals for the sixth consecutive season. The Angolan powerhouse established dominance early, finishing the first quarter with a commanding 26-16 lead and maintaining control throughout the contest.

American guard Chasson Randle spearheaded the attack for Petro de Luanda by scoring 20 points, including three opening three-pointers. Center Yanick Moreira provided critical support off the bench with 16 points, while Pete Jok added 15 points entirely from beyond the arc. The balanced offensive rotation enabled the Angolan club to build a lead as large as 20 points during the match.

Dar City struggled heavily with squad depth as their bench was outscored 51-16 by the Angolan champions. Starters Daniel Utomi, Nisre Zouzoua, and Michael Foster combined for 52 of Dar City's 69 points, with each playing over 39 minutes. Their offensive options deteriorated further in the second quarter when guard David Michineau suffered a hamstring injury and did not return.

The victory sets up a highly anticipated semifinal clash between Petro de Luanda and Al Ahly Ly of Libya on Thursday. The fixture serves as an official rematch of the 2024 BAL championship final. Petro de Luanda forward Raphiael Putney credited their success to an improved defensive mindset, noting that the squad remained focused on maintaining momentum to reach the finals.

Dar City player Sisko Ngaiza expressed pride in his team's historic quarterfinal run despite their ultimate elimination. He acknowledged that a lack of top-flight experience hurt them in the second leg against a seasoned opponent. Ngaiza emphasized that the tournament provided invaluable lessons that would help the Tanzanian club return stronger in future continental campaigns.
