Pelicans Trade Jordan Hawkins and Micah Peavy to Grizzlies in Four-Player Deal

The New Orleans Pelicans have agreed to trade Jordan Hawkins and Micah Peavy to the Memphis Grizzlies in a move that also includes future draft compensation, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. New Orleans will receive guard AJ Johnson and veteran forward Taj Gibson in return.

As part of the deal, the Pelicans are sending a future second-round pick and a future second-round pick swap to Memphis. The transaction gives New Orleans additional roster and financial flexibility as the team works toward completing a two-year, $16 million contract with Bennedict Mathurin. ESPN's Bobby Marks reported that the trade saves the Pelicans approximately $5.7 million in salary.

Hawkins, 24, was selected 14th overall by New Orleans in the 2023 NBA Draft after helping UConn win the national championship. However, his role diminished significantly last season. He averaged 5.1 points in 51 appearances while playing 13.6 minutes per game, down from 10.8 points and 23.6 minutes per game in the 2024-25 campaign.

Peavy, a 2025 second-round selection, also leaves New Orleans after one season. The 6-foot-7 wing appeared in 61 games as a rookie, averaging 4.3 points per game while playing about 15 minutes per contest. Memphis will now have an opportunity to develop both young players while also adding future second-round draft value.

Johnson, 21, arrives in New Orleans after a rapid series of moves since entering the league. Originally selected 23rd overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in 2024, he has also spent time with Washington, Dallas and Memphis. He split last season between the Wizards and Mavericks, appearing in 48 games and averaging 3.3 points in 9.5 minutes per game.

Gibson brings extensive experience to the Pelicans. The 41-year-old veteran has played 17 NBA seasons and appeared in 10 games for Memphis last season. His primary value is expected to come through veteran leadership and frontcourt depth rather than a major on-court role.

The Grizzlies will now have to make further roster decisions ahead of the 2026-27 season because they have several guaranteed contracts above the NBA's 15-player regular-season limit.
