Pacers Rally from 17 Down to Edge Knicks in Overtime Thriller in Eastern Conference Finals Opener

Posted : 22 May 2025

The Indiana Pacers staged a remarkable comeback in the fourth quarter, overcoming a 17-point deficit to defeat the New York Knicks 138-135 in overtime during the opening game of the NBA Eastern Conference finals.

The Knicks, led by Jalen Brunson’s 41 points, had established a 14-point lead with under three minutes remaining, seemingly in control of the game. However, the Pacers ignited a furious rally, sparked by Aaron Nesmith’s five three-pointers, and Tyrese Haliburton’s buzzer-beater forced the game into overtime.

In the extra period, the Pacers maintained their momentum and sealed a memorable win at Madison Square Garden. Haliburton expressed pride in the team’s resilience, emphasizing their determination throughout the season to fight through adversity and secure victories in challenging situations.

He admitted there was still room for improvement despite the thrilling win and humorously recounted a near game-winning three-pointer in regulation, which was ruled a two-point shot after video review showed his foot on the line.

This victory marked the fourth time the Pacers have rallied from a 15-point or greater deficit in the playoffs, underscoring their tenacity. On the other side, Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau acknowledged the disappointment but stressed the importance of focusing on the next game and channeling that frustration into renewed determination. The series continues with Game 2 scheduled to take place in New York.

Meanwhile, in the Western Conference finals, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the Oklahoma City Thunder to a win over the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 1 and was also named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player for the 2024-25 season, adding a significant individual accolade amid the ongoing playoff action.
