Oyedeji Charges Lagos Legends to Raise Standards Ahead of BAL Debut

Posted : 20 February 2026

As preparations intensify for the 2026 edition of the Basketball Africa League, former NBA star Olumide Oyedeji has urged Lagos Legends to upgrade their preparations ahead of their historic debut.

Oyedeji, a Vice President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee and President of the Nigeria Olympians Association, said the Nigerian champions must reinforce their squad and seek quality international friendlies if they hope to compete effectively.

“This is BAL. It demands a different level,” he said, stressing the need for experienced players who understand the intensity of continental competition.

Lagos Legends, also known as Moktown Flyers, qualified after defeating Rivers Hoops in the NBBF abridged Premier League final. The victory secured Nigeria’s slot and also placed the team among Africa’s elite clubs.

The 2026 BAL season tips off on March 27 in Pretoria, moves to Rabat, and concludes on May 31 in Kigali, featuring 12 clubs battling across 42 games for the title.

Among the heavyweights expected are Egypt’s Al Ahly SC, Libya’s Al Ahly Benghazi, Angola’s Petro de Luanda, Rwanda’s APR BBC, Morocco’s FUS Rabat, and Senegal’s ASC Ville de Dakar.

The league’s profile continues to rise globally, with growing broadcast reach and fan engagement across the continent.

Oyedeji believes Lagos Legends possess solid coaching and management structures but insists depth and experience will determine how far they go.

“They have the foundation. Now they must strengthen and prepare properly. It won’t be easy,” he warned.

For Nigeria’s representatives, the message is clear: preparation will define performance.
