The Orlando Magic have dismissed head coach Jamahl Mosley following the team’s disappointing end to the season, the franchise confirmed on Monday. The decision comes after five seasons in charge, during which Mosley guided the team through a rebuild and back into the playoffs.
Despite reaching the postseason in three consecutive years, the Magic were unable to progress beyond the first round, including a recent seven-game defeat to the Detroit Pistons after losing a 3-1 series lead. Mosley finished his tenure with a 189-221 record, highlighting both progress and ongoing inconsistency.
Team president Jeff Weltman confirmed the decision and praised Mosley’s contribution while stating that a new direction was needed. He will now oversee the search for the franchise’s next head coach as the organisation looks to reset its ambitions.
Mosley had previously earned recognition for building a strong defensive identity, with Orlando ranking among the NBA’s top defensive teams in recent seasons. However, offensive struggles persisted, with the team regularly finishing near the bottom of league scoring rankings.
Expectations rose significantly after a major trade for guard Desmond Bane, but the Magic failed to make a major leap and spent much of the season battling for play-in positioning before another early playoff exit.
Injuries also played a major role throughout Mosley’s tenure, with key players such as Paolo Banchero, Jalen Suggs, and Franz Wagner all missing significant time. Wagner’s absence in the final games of the Pistons series proved particularly costly after Orlando squandered a commanding lead.
