The 2025 NBA Finals will see the Oklahoma City Thunder square off against the Indiana Pacers in a best-of-seven series beginning Thursday, June 5. This marks Oklahoma City’s first finals appearance since 2012 and Indiana’s first since 2000. The Thunder advanced after defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves 4-1 in the Western Conference finals, while the Pacers emerged from the East with a 4-2 victory over the New York Knicks.
The Thunder, led by MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, are in pursuit of their first NBA title since relocating from Seattle, where the franchise last won in 1979. Gilgeous-Alexander, also known as SGA, became the first Canadian MVP since Steve Nash and could join elite company by winning both MVP and Finals in the same year — a feat last accomplished by Steph Curry in 2015.
Indiana, on the other hand, is still searching for its first NBA championship, with Tyrese Haliburton spearheading a team known for its thrilling postseason comebacks, including dramatic wins against Milwaukee, Cleveland, and New York.
Oklahoma City has already bested Indiana twice this season, once in December and again in March, suggesting a psychological edge heading into the finals. However, the Pacers have proven their resilience in clutch moments, often clawing back from daunting deficits, particularly through Haliburton’s heroics.
The Thunder averaged slightly more points per game during the regular season, but Indiana’s never-say-die attitude could make for a tightly contested series. Both teams also share identical postseason records, each winning 12 out of 16 games.
Home-court advantage lies with the Thunder, thanks to their superior 68-win regular season, compared to Indiana's 50. As such, Oklahoma City will host Games 1, 2, 5, and 7 if the series goes the distance. Historically, teams with home-court advantage have won 16 of the last 25 finals, though recent trends show that this edge hasn’t guaranteed success. With history on the line and both franchises seeking long-awaited glory, this year's NBA Finals promise high drama and the potential for a fresh champion.
