NYPD Deploys 10,000 Officers for Knicks Championship Victory Parade

Posted : 18 June 2026

New York City is preparing for a massive security operation as the New York Knicks’ NBA championship victory parade takes over Manhattan on Thursday. The New York Police Department confirmed that 10,000 officers will be deployed for the event, marking the largest number ever assigned to a planned gathering in the city.

The heightened security comes in response to previous celebrations during the Knicks’ playoff run, which saw jubilant crowds but also instances of disorder and violence. Authorities say the large police presence is intended to ensure public safety during what is expected to be a historic and heavily attended celebration.

The parade is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. near Bowling Green in the Financial District and will proceed north along Broadway through the iconic “Canyon of Heroes” before concluding at City Hall. There, Mayor Zohran Mamdani will formally present the team with the keys to the city as part of the official celebration.

City officials have praised the Knicks for their championship run, with the mayor describing the victory as a long-awaited moment for New Yorkers. The parade route, traditionally used for ticker-tape celebrations, is expected to draw massive crowds as fans gather to honour the team’s success.

Several Knicks legends are expected to participate in the event, including Walt “Clyde” Frazier and Patrick Ewing, both of whom played key roles in the franchise’s historic championship eras. Longtime announcer Mike Breen is also set to host the ceremony at City Hall.

Grammy-winning artist Alicia Keys has been confirmed as a performer for the celebration. Expressing excitement on social media, she highlighted her connection to the city and the team’s achievement as part of the celebration of New York pride.

The celebrations follow intense scenes across the city after the Knicks clinched the title, when 63 people were arrested and several police officers were injured during spontaneous street gatherings. Officials are aiming to avoid similar disruptions during the official parade.

The victory parade will also mark a historic first, as the Knicks’ previous championships in 1970 and 1973 were not celebrated with a ticker-tape procession. This year’s event is expected to provide the long-awaited grand tribute the franchise and its fans have been anticipating for decades.
