The Jordan Nwora Basketball Camp will continue its growing expansion across Africa when it returns to Lagos in June for another edition of its youth development initiative.
After successful programmes in Monrovia, Liberia and Accra, Ghana, the camp is set to hold from June 14 to 16 in Ilupeju, Lagos, where 120 young basketball players, comprising 60 boys and 60 girls, are expected to participate in intensive training and mentorship sessions.
Chairman of the Organising Committee, Retired Colonel Sam Ahmedu, said the steady growth of the camp across the continent reflects its increasing impact on grassroots basketball development and youth empowerment.
According to Ahmedu, this year’s edition will further strengthen international ties, with two American coaches expected to be part of the technical crew as the initiative continues to connect African talents with elite basketball development structures in the United States.
He noted that the programme has enjoyed strong backing from basketball stakeholders outside Nigeria, especially in countries where previous editions were staged.
Ahmedu explained that basketball authorities in Ghana and Liberia actively supported the camp, with federation presidents and board members attending activities in those countries.
“From every other country apart from Nigeria the support has been great. These countries have powered the camp,” he said.
He, however, revealed that the Nigeria Basketball Federation has remained largely uninvolved since the initiative began despite efforts made by the organisers to establish collaboration.
“The first year we wrote to the Federation they didn't do anything. The second year the same thing, so we decided to stop liaising with the Nigerian federation,” Ahmedu stated.
Despite the lack of institutional support locally, he insisted that the camp’s mission remains focused on creating opportunities for young people through basketball development and mentorship.
“It’s for the youth, as long as we can reach the youth we will keep doing it,” Ahmedu added.
Inspired by Nigerian-American NBA player Jordan Nwora, the basketball camp has continued to emerge as one of Africa’s notable youth-focused development programmes, providing aspiring players with exposure, training and mentorship opportunities across the continent.
The upcoming Lagos edition underscores a resolute commitment to nurturing elite grassroots talent across West Africa despite regional administrative hurdles. By blending domestic ambition with international coaching expertise, the initiative bridges the gap between raw potential and global sporting platforms. The structured event promises to solidify long-term athletic opportunities and empowerment pathways for the next generation of Nigerian stars.
