The Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF) has commended Nestlé Nigeria Plc. for its long-standing commitment to grassroots sports development through the sponsorship of the MILO Secondary School Basketball Championship. Now in its 26th edition, the competition remains Nigeria's longest-running secondary school basketball tournament and has become a major platform for discovering young talent.
Speaking ahead of the national finals, which begin on June 27 in Lagos, NSSF President Olabisi Joseph described Nestlé's contribution to school sports as unmatched. She thanked the company and the MILO brand for investing consistently in the development of young athletes over the past 26 years.
According to Joseph, the championship has positively influenced millions of Nigerian children by creating opportunities to combine education with sporting excellence. She noted that many players who first showcased their abilities at the tournament have progressed to represent their states, earned places on Nigeria's national teams, and built successful professional careers both within the country and overseas.
Joseph explained that the competition has evolved beyond a basketball tournament. She said it has become a platform where discipline, teamwork, leadership and sportsmanship are nurtured alongside academic development. The annual championship has also encouraged cultural integration by bringing together students from different parts of the country in a healthy competitive environment.
This year's edition attracted more than 13,000 secondary schools from across Nigeria, making it one of the largest school sports competitions on the continent. Following state and regional qualifiers, 12 teams have secured places at the national finals, including first-time finalists from Katsina and Ekiti States.
Joseph described the growth of the championship as evidence of its lasting impact on youth development. She said what started as a modest initiative has grown into a nationwide movement that continues to inspire students and strengthen school sports across the country.
Beyond the matches, organisers have planned several educational and developmental activities during the finals. Participants will take part in basketball clinics, mentorship programmes and cultural exhibitions designed to support their personal growth both on and off the court.
To preserve the integrity of the competition, the NSSF will implement strict eligibility measures throughout the tournament. Screening exercises, biometric verification and data capture will be used to confirm that all participants meet the age and school attendance requirements.
Joseph added that the ultimate objective of the championship extends beyond winning medals and trophies. She said the programme is designed to build confidence, develop leadership qualities and prepare young Nigerians to become responsible citizens while pursuing excellence in both academics and sports.
