Former D’Tigress captain Sarah Ogoke has officially drawn the curtain on her national team career, bringing to an end over a decade of remarkable service to Nigerian basketball.
The 35-year-old, who captained the senior women’s team with distinction, announced her retirement in Lyon, France, during an emotional ceremony witnessed by teammates and officials. The event was organised by Xejet, partners of the Nigerian women’s national team, in recognition of her outstanding contributions.
Ogoke leaves the national team as one of its most decorated players, having played a pivotal role in D’Tigress’ dominance on the continent, including winning five consecutive Afrobasket titles since 2017.
Reacting to the development, the National Sports Commission praised her dedication and legacy. Its chairman, Shehu Dikko, described Ogoke as a pride to the nation, noting that her commitment and achievements have earned admiration at the highest level, including from Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Dikko also highlighted the inspiration Ogoke has provided to women and young girls across the country, adding that her story reflects resilience, discipline, and purpose both on and off the court.
Similarly, the Commission’s Director General, Bukola Olopade, hailed Ogoke as a rare figure in Nigerian sports—one who has successfully combined elite athletics with academic excellence and family life.
According to him, her journey as a medical doctor, athlete, wife, and mother makes her a role model for the next generation, stressing that her impact will continue beyond her playing days as the Commission looks to tap into her experience.
Despite stepping away from international basketball, Ogoke’s legacy remains firmly etched in the history of D’Tigress. The team is expected to honour her with a fitting send-off as they face Germany in their final game at the FIBA Women’s World Cup qualifying tournament in Lyon.
Her retirement marks the end of an era, but also the beginning of a lasting influence on Nigerian basketball.
Sarah Ogoke’s retirement brings to a close a distinguished chapter in Nigerian basketball defined by excellence and leadership. Her achievements and influence will continue to inspire future generations, ensuring her legacy endures beyond her playing career.
