Nigeria U18 Women Thrash Senegal 70-40 to Reach AfroBasket Quarter-Finals

Nigeria’s U18 women’s basketball team advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket after recording a convincing 70-40 victory over Senegal on Sunday in Abidjan. The 30-point win gave Nigeria a strong finish to the group stage and confirmed their place in the knockout rounds.

The Nigerian team controlled the contest and built a commanding advantage as the game progressed. Their defensive discipline limited Senegal to just 40 points, while Nigeria produced enough offensive firepower to complete a comfortable victory.

The result was particularly important after Nigeria suffered a narrow 75-74 defeat to Cameroon in their previous group match. The one-point loss ended Nigeria’s perfect start, but the response against Senegal restored momentum ahead of the knockout stage.

Nigeria finished the group phase with two victories and one defeat. The result secured their place in the quarter-finals, where they will continue their pursuit of the continental championship.

Senegal, meanwhile, ended their group campaign without a victory. The 40-point performance against Nigeria followed defeats to Cameroon and Tunisia, leaving the Senegalese side with a 0-3 record.

Nigeria entered the tournament among the teams with direct qualification to the finals after reaching the semi-finals of the previous edition. The 2026 tournament is being staged in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, from August 5 to 16.

The competition also carries an important qualification prize. The top two teams at the FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket will qualify for the 2027 FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup, adding further significance to Nigeria’s progress into the knockout phase.

Nigeria will now turn their attention to the quarter-finals as they seek to build on their dominant performance against Senegal. The team will need another disciplined display to stay in contention for a place in the semi-finals and keep their title ambitions alive.
