Nigeria U18 D'Tigers Crush Burkina Faso 98-54 in FIBA Qualifier

Posted : 09 July 2026

Nigeria's U18 D'Tigers produced an outstanding all-round performance to defeat Burkina Faso 98-54 in the FIBA U18 African Championship qualifiers.

The young Nigerians dominated the contest from the opening tip-off, controlling both ends of the court and building a comfortable lead that continued to grow throughout the game.

Nigeria's balanced attack proved too much for the hosts, with several players making significant contributions. Victor Nwafor and Joshua Ogbonna led the scoring with 18 points each, while Thomas Agbo Okoh added 16 points in another impressive display.

Victor Endurance Sunday also played a key role in the victory, finishing with 17 points and nine rebounds to narrowly miss a double-double. His performance helped Nigeria maintain control of the paint and limit Burkina Faso's scoring opportunities.

The Nigerian bench also made a strong impact, providing valuable minutes and maintaining the team's high intensity whenever substitutions were made. Their contribution ensured the D'Tigers never allowed Burkina Faso back into the contest.

Nigeria's defensive discipline was another major factor in the victory. The team consistently forced turnovers, protected the basket and converted defensive stops into fast-break opportunities, allowing them to extend their lead in several quarters.

On the offensive end, the D'Tigers displayed excellent ball movement and teamwork. Their ability to create open scoring opportunities and share the scoring load highlighted the depth within the squad.

The emphatic result gives Nigeria valuable momentum as the qualification tournament progresses. It also underlines the strength of the country's youth basketball programme, with several players delivering performances that suggest a bright future for Nigerian basketball.

The coaching staff will be encouraged by the team's discipline, energy and consistency throughout the game as they continue preparations for tougher tests later in the competition.

With confidence growing after such a convincing victory, the U18 D'Tigers will now shift their focus to their upcoming fixtures as they continue their quest to qualify for the FIBA U18 African Championship and compete for continental honours.
