Nigeria U-20 handball team start African Championship with victory

Nigeria’s Under-20 Men’s Handball team began their campaign at the 33rd African Men’s Junior Nations Championship on a winning note, overcoming Algeria 23-18 in their Group B opener in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, on Saturday.

The Nigerian youngsters had to withstand a closely fought first half before stepping up their performance after the break to secure a five-goal victory.

Nigeria led by just one goal at halftime, 10-9, but returned from the interval with greater intensity, combining disciplined defending with more effective attacking play.

The team scored 13 goals in the second half while limiting Algeria to nine, gradually pulling away from their opponents to claim the crucial opening victory.

A major factor behind Nigeria’s success was the outstanding performance of goalkeeper Samuel Obabori Aduralare, who produced several important saves at critical moments to preserve his side’s advantage.

His impressive display between the posts earned him the Player of the Match award.

The victory gives Nigeria two points in Group B, where they will face Angola and Madagascar in their remaining group fixtures alongside Algeria.

With the perfect start secured, the Nigerian side will now seek to maintain their momentum and build on their impressive defensive performance as they continue their quest for honours at the continental championship.
