Nigeria’s quest for a place at the 2026 Commonwealth Games gathers momentum as the Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball Federation has officially commenced preparations for the crucial qualifiers in Angola.
The federation has summoned 16 athletes to a closed camping exercise scheduled to hold from March 8 to 21 at Package ‘B’ of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.
The intensive training programme is designed to fine-tune strategies and build cohesion ahead of the 2026 IWBF Africa 3x3 Championship, which doubles as the Commonwealth Games qualifying tournament.
In the men’s category, Shittu Musbau, Adetayo Emmanuel Kehinde, Abel Oluwaseun, Akinde Tony, Bailey Oluwasegun, Durowoju Taiwo Babalola, Mohammed Muritala, and Rilwan Abubakir will battle for national colours.
On the women’s side, Olabisi Ijigbamigbe, Nofisat Adefala, Amakor Patricia, Aishat Yahaya, Christiana Olowolagba, Grace Nwaozuzu, and Folashade Obagbemi have been drafted into camp.
The qualifiers are slated for March 22 to 27 in Luanda, Angola, where top African nations will compete for Commonwealth Games slots.
President of the federation, Oluwaseyi Johnson, expressed optimism about Nigeria’s chances, noting that preparations have been deliberate and focused.
“We are fully prepared and determined to excel at the 2026 IWBF Africa 3x3 Championship, which serves as the Commonwealth Games qualifiers,” Johnson said.
“Our players are committed, and the technical crew is working tirelessly to ensure we put up a strong performance.”
He further applauded the National Sports Commission for its consistent backing, stressing that sustained support and strategic planning will help Nigeria shine on the continental stage.
With camp set to open and expectations high, the stage is firmly set for Nigeria’s wheelchair basketball teams to chase qualification glory in Angola.
