Glasgow 2026: Nigeria’s Rising 3×3 Profile Earns Historic Commonwealth Games Ticket

Posted : 05 February 2026

Nigeria’s growing reputation in the fast-paced world of 3×3 basketball has paid off, with the country securing qualification for the men’s event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow through the official ranking pathway.

The announcement, made by Commonwealth Sport on Tuesday, confirmed Nigeria as one of the nations set to compete in the basketball events scheduled for July 24–29 at the Scottish Event Campus. The qualification represents a landmark achievement, as it will be Nigeria’s first appearance in 3×3 basketball at the Commonwealth Games.

Unlike traditional qualification through regional tournaments, Nigeria earned its place through a steady climb in the global 3×3 rankings, highlighting the nation’s increased participation, consistency, and competitiveness in the format.

Nigeria will join fellow debutants Guyana and Malaysia in the men’s competition, while Uganda are set to make their first appearance in the women’s event.

Renowned for its speed and intensity, 3×3 basketball features two teams of three players competing on a single hoop, with a 12-second shot clock that ensures non-stop action. Matches are decided either within 10 minutes or when a team reaches 21 points, making it one of the most exciting formats in modern basketball.

The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place from July 23 to August 2, featuring 10 sports across four main venues: Scotstoun Stadium, the Scottish Event Campus, the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and Arena, and the Tollcross International Swimming Centre.
