Nigeria’s David Ugonna Ike Joins Georgia Bulldogs Following Standout NBA Academy Stint

Posted : 17 April 2026

The Georgia Bulldogs have secured a significant addition to their frontcourt with the signing of Nigerian standout David Ugonna Ike. Head coach Mike White confirmed on Thursday that the 7-foot, 235-pound center has finalized his commitment to join the program as a freshman for the 2026-27 season. Ike, a native of Owerri, is regarded as one of the most promising post prospects emerging from the NBA Academy Africa.

Ike’s recruitment comes on the heels of a dominant performance at the Advance Global Cup held in Malaga, Spain, earlier this year. During that tournament, he led the NBA Academy Africa to an undefeated 3-0 record while averaging a massive double-double of 24.3 points and 12.3 rebounds. His efficiency was equally impressive, as he converted 61.4 percent of his shots from the field and nearly 80 percent from the free-throw line.

The center’s defensive prowess has been a defining characteristic of his rise in international basketball. In 2024, he was named the Defensive MVP at the Basketball Without Borders Africa Camp and was selected as an All-Star. His reputation grew further during the FIBA U18 Afrobasket Championship, where he anchored the Nigerian national team's defense. He notably recorded five blocks in a single game against Uganda, showcasing the rim protection he will bring to Georgia.

Beyond his academy play, Ike has gained valuable professional-level experience in the Basketball Africa League (BAL). He spent two seasons with the Rivers Hoopers, helping the Nigerian club achieve consecutive third-place playoff finishes in 2024 and 2025. This exposure to veteran competition is expected to ease his transition to the physical demands of the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

Coach Mike White praised Ike’s development, noting that his size and mobility fit the modern collegiate game. The Bulldogs are looking to rebuild their roster after losing several key players to the transfer portal and graduation this offseason. Ike becomes the first prep commitment of Georgia’s 2026 class, joining recently signed Penn State transfer Freddie Dilione V and junior college guard Kemauri Millender.

Ike follows in the footsteps of recent NBA Academy Africa graduates like Khaman Maluach and Ulrich Chomche, who both made the jump to high-level American basketball and the NBA Draft. For the Bulldogs, Ike represents a crucial defensive anchor who can provide immediate interior scoring. His arrival in Athens is anticipated to be a cornerstone of the team’s strategy to return to the NCAA Tournament.
