Following the successful conclusion of the women’s trials, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Sports Unit is set to conduct men’s trials ahead of the 2025 CGC Volleyball Premier League.
According to Samuel Onikeku, Head of Sports at NCS, the men’s trial will take place from July 19 to 29 at the Nigeria Customs Service Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) in Gwagwalada, FCT, with participant arrival scheduled for Saturday.
Onikeku revealed that the NCS is aiming to rebuild the men's volleyball team and return it to winning form, much like the women's team.
He noted that the NCS men’s team has previously won the Nigerian Volleyball League three times, but recent setbacks arose due to the retirement of key players and others transitioning into coaching roles.
"As you are aware, the men’s team has been three-time champions of the Nigerian League, but due to the retirement of some of the senior players and others moving into coaching, a gap occurred, which allowed other teams to capitalise," Onikeku said.
"To return to winning ways and make the service proud, we are giving every top player in the country the opportunity to attend the trials."
He added that before the retirement of several key athletes, the men's team consistently ranked among the top three in the country.
"All players will be given equal opportunities to prove themselves before the final selection is made."
Onikeku also urged the athletes to demonstrate a high level of discipline throughout the trials. He assured participants that accommodation, transportation, and feeding would be fully provided, just as in the women’s trials.
