Nicolas Batum Announces Retirement After 18 NBA Seasons

Nicolas Batum has announced his retirement from professional basketball at the age of 37, bringing an end to an 18-year NBA career and a long international career with France.

The French forward revealed his decision on Monday in a social media video recorded with his 10-year-old son. Batum said he had spent 20 years as a professional, including 18 seasons in the NBA and 15 with the French national team, and felt it was time to return home and make room for the next generation.

Batum entered the NBA in 2008 after being selected 25th overall by the Houston Rockets and subsequently traded to the Portland Trail Blazers. He later played for the Charlotte Hornets, Philadelphia 76ers and LA Clippers, finishing his career with 1,205 regular-season appearances.

Across his NBA career, Batum averaged 9.6 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 37.1% from three-point range. He also appeared in 76 playoff games and helped the Clippers reach the Western Conference finals in 2021.

Batum was equally important to France's national team. He won Olympic silver medals at the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Games, while also helping France secure bronze at the 2014 and 2019 FIBA World Cups. He finished his international career with 177 appearances for Les Bleus.

The Clippers declined their $5.9 million team option for the 2026-27 season earlier this summer, leaving Batum an unrestricted free agent before he decided to retire.
