Stakeholders Urge NBBF to Conduct March 2026 Elections

Posted : 12 January 2026

Growing pressure from stakeholders has prompted the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) to set March 2026 as the target date for its long-overdue Elective Congress. Efforts are intensifying to restore constitutional order and ensure proper governance within the federation.

This development follows a high-level stakeholders’ meeting attended by NBBF board members, basketball interest groups, officials from the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), and the Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade. The discussions focused on concerns over governance lapses, particularly the failure to conduct elections before the expiration of the federation’s tenure, which resulted in an extended stay in office beyond constitutional limits.

Participants emphasised that Nigerian basketball could no longer tolerate administrative uncertainty. Talks centred on aligning the federation’s strategic, technical, and administrative direction with the broader objectives of the National Sports Commission, particularly in preparation for the 2026 sports calendar.

Attention was drawn to Article 20.4 of the NBBF Constitution, which mandates at least 21 days’ notice before the Annual General Meeting (AGM). Stakeholders stressed that strict adherence to this provision is essential, warning that any deviation could further erode confidence in the federation’s leadership.

There was broad consensus that any tenure extension or delay in elections beyond constitutional limits is unacceptable. Stakeholders agreed that March 2026 is the final window to hold elections, provided that preparatory processes commence immediately.

The meeting also resolved to reconvene soon to establish a clear, time-bound roadmap for the elections, ensuring full compliance with constitutional requirements. Both the National Sports Commission and the Nigeria Olympic Committee reiterated that their role is not to dictate outcomes but to ensure the federation operates within its constitution, which requires elections at the conclusion of every four-year tenure.

Stakeholders concluded that a return to transparent electoral processes, constitutional discipline, and inclusive leadership is vital for safeguarding the credibility, growth, and future of basketball in Nigeria.
