NBBF Elections: Oyedeji Unveils Blueprint to Transform Nigerian Basketball

Posted : 07 October 2026

Former D’Tigers captain and Nigerian Olympic Committee Vice President Olumide Oyedeji has unveiled an ambitious blueprint to transform Nigerian basketball as he declared his intention to contest the presidency of the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF).

Oyedeji, who is also the Secretary-General of the World Olympians Association, said his ambition is centred on rebuilding the structures of the sport, restoring unity and creating sustainable opportunities for athletes and other stakeholders.

The former NBA player said his decision to seek the NBBF presidency was motivated by a desire to contribute to the next phase of Nigerian basketball rather than personal ambition.

With more than three decades of experience as an athlete and administrator, Oyedeji said his journey from grassroots basketball in Ibadan to the NBA, Olympic Games, World Championships, Commonwealth Games, African Games and professional leagues across six continents has given him first-hand knowledge of the sport’s challenges.

“I understand the journey because I have lived it from the grassroots courts of Ibadan to the biggest basketball stages in the world,” he said.

“I know the journey, and I am ready to build the pathway for the next generation.”

Oyedeji identified disunity, weak structures, inadequate investment and leadership challenges among the major factors limiting the growth of basketball in Nigeria.

He pledged to confront regional divisions, political interference and personal interests while promoting a more inclusive administration capable of bringing the various stakeholders together.

At the centre of his proposed administration is an athlete-focused approach, with improved welfare and career development listed among his major priorities.

Oyedeji promised to pursue appropriate insurance schemes, better medical support, injury protection and fair treatment for players, while also introducing mentoring and educational opportunities to prepare athletes for life after competitive sports.

He said the federation must take responsibility for athletes beyond their active playing careers.

Grassroots development also occupies a prominent position in Oyedeji’s agenda, with plans to establish functional programmes across the six geopolitical zones.

He proposed deeper collaboration with state associations to take basketball into schools, communities, local governments and underserved areas, arguing that talent identification should not be restricted to major cities.

“No talented Nigerian child should be denied the opportunity to succeed because of geography, background, connections or financial circumstances,” he said.

The former D’Tigers captain also plans to strengthen the connection between youth basketball, domestic leagues, national teams and professional opportunities abroad.

He said secondary schools, colleges, academies and grassroots competitions must form part of a structured development pathway capable of producing the next generation of Nigerian players.

Oyedeji also identified the domestic leagues as an area requiring urgent attention, promising to push for a reliable calendar and professionally managed men’s and women’s competitions.

According to him, a properly structured domestic league would create a stronger commercial platform for players, coaches, sponsors, broadcasters and supporters.

Beyond athletes and coaches, he said his administration would invest in the wider basketball ecosystem by developing administrators, team managers, medical personnel, journalists, media officers, content creators and marketers.

Technical development would also receive attention, with Oyedeji proposing continuous training, certification, mentorship and international exposure for coaches, referees, statisticians, commissioners and other officials.

He said collaboration with FIBA and other international organisations would be explored to provide quality technical education and certification opportunities.

“Merit, not favouritism, must determine the opportunity,” Oyedeji said, while also pledging that national-team selection would be guided by performance, discipline, commitment and national interest.

Women’s basketball is another major component of his proposed programme, with a commitment to create more opportunities for girls and women to play, compete and occupy leadership positions.

Oyedeji said Nigeria’s record of producing outstanding female players and teams must be supported with sustainable structures capable of protecting and extending that legacy.

On administration, he promised greater financial transparency through audited reports, open governance and clear institutional policies.

He also plans to reposition the NBBF as an attractive commercial property capable of securing credible corporate sponsorships, media-rights partnerships and private-sector investment.

“Nigerian basketball must become an investment-worthy sports property rather than depend primarily on government support,” he said.

Infrastructure development also features in his plans, with proposals to work with government and private-sector partners to refurbish existing facilities and provide modern community basketball courts.

Oyedeji said his international relationships within the NBA, FIBA, International Olympic Committee and other sporting organisations could be leveraged to secure technical assistance, exchange programmes, international camps, scholarships and sponsorship opportunities for Nigerian athletes and officials.

However, the former national team captain believes unity remains fundamental to achieving any meaningful transformation.

Describing himself as a bridge-builder, Oyedeji promised to promote fairness, transparency, inclusion and accountability while ensuring that all stakeholders have a role in the development of the game.

“The game belongs to all of us, and everyone must have a meaningful place within it,” he said.

As the next NBBF electoral cycle gathers momentum, Oyedeji said the contest should be viewed as an opportunity to determine the future direction of Nigerian basketball.

“This election must be about more than choosing an individual. It must be about choosing the future of Nigerian basketball,” he said.

He pledged to consult stakeholders, explain decisions and ensure responsible management of the federation’s resources if elected.

“I am not coming to take from basketball. I am coming to build a legacy that will outlive us all,” Oyedeji declared.

He called on delegates and other stakeholders to support a new direction anchored on unity, transparency, athlete welfare and measurable development.

Oyedeji will now seek to convert his playing pedigree, administrative experience and international network into electoral support as the race for the NBBF presidency gathers momentum.
