NBA set for first vote on Las Vegas, Seattle expansion

Posted : 16 March 2026

The NBA is poised to take a major step toward expanding its footprint, with a scheduled vote at the upcoming Board of Governors meetings to consider exploring new franchises in Las Vegas and Seattle. Sources tell ESPN that the vote, set for March 24‑25, would not immediately add teams but would authorize the league to begin a formal process for inviting bids for expansion clubs targeted to start play in the 2028‑29 season.

Industry insiders say there is momentum among owners and league officials to move forward with the proposal, which could see each new franchise command bids in the $7‑10 billion range — figures that would rival the highest valuations in professional sports. If successful, the initiative would launch the league’s first expansion since the addition of the Charlotte Bobcats in 2004, increasing the NBA’s roster from 30 to 32 teams.

The initial vote would not immediately finalize the expansion. Rather, it would empower the NBA to solicit and evaluate potential ownership groups for each market before a second and final vote later in the year, which must receive support from at least 23 of the 30 governors to formally approve expansion. Emirates of both Las Vegas and Seattle have been touted as strong candidates due to their commercial potential and deep fan interest, with Seattle long yearning for the return of an NBA franchise after the departure of the SuperSonics in 2008.

Las Vegas, despite never having hosted an NBA team, has grown into a major sports hub, with regular NBA Summer League action and the success of the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces helping to elevate its profile. The possible arrival of an NBA team would mark another milestone in the city’s rapid ascent as a professional sports destination.

Should the expansion process advance, it would likely prompt adjustments across the league’s structure, including conference alignment, scheduling, and draft procedures — shaping the NBA’s competitive landscape for years to come.
