NBA, NFL increases presence in Africa

Posted : 30 November 2023

The NBA has made significant strides in Africa, with over 70% of its players having African ancestry. The league has established NBA Africa, a dedicated office that oversees all of its operations on the continent. NBA Africa has been instrumental in developing basketball infrastructure in Africa, including building new courts and training facilities. The league has also launched the Basketball Africa League (BAL), a professional basketball league that features teams from across Africa.

The NFL is also making inroads in Africa, with over 56% of its players having African ancestry. The league has established NFL Africa, a dedicated office that oversees all of its operations on the continent. NFL Africa has been working to develop American football programs in Africa, including hosting camps and clinics for coaches and players. The league has also launched the NFL Flag Football World Championship, which features teams from around the world, including several African countries.

The NBA and NFL's investments in Africa are paying off. More and more African players are making their way to the NBA and NFL, and the leagues are becoming increasingly popular across the continent.

The African sports economy is booming, growing at an impressive 5% per annum over the past two decades. This growth is being fueled by increasing investment in sports infrastructure, rising disposable incomes, and a growing middle class. As a result, the value of NBA Africa has soared to over $1 billion since its inception in 2017.

Sports tech funding in Africa has also tripled since November 2020, indicating a growing appetite for innovation in the sports sector. This is further supported by the fact that only 0.5% of Africa's GDP is currently generated by sports, compared to 2% in other parts of the world. This significant gap signals the immense potential for growth in the African sports industry.

These statistics show that the sports industry in Africa is booming, and that there is a lot of room for growth in the years to come. The NBA and NFL are both making significant investments in Africa, and it is clear that the continent is a major focus for both leagues. With a young and growing population with a passion for sports, Africa has the potential to become a major market for both the NBA and NFL.
