NBA Investigation Finds No Evidence Steve Ballmer Funneled Money to Kawhi Leonard

Posted : 19 August 2026

The NBA has reportedly found no evidence that Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer funneled money through team sponsors to Kawhi Leonard in an attempt to circumvent the league’s salary cap.

The league is instead examining whether the Clippers violated NBA rules by introducing Leonard to team sponsors and whether the organization failed to properly supervise its employees. The investigation has also expanded beyond the now-defunct Aspiration to include other companies that had business relationships with the Clippers.

The NBA has disputed aspects of the reporting, saying an ESPN article contained “numerous and significant inaccuracies” and stressing that its final findings will only be known once the investigation is completed. The ongoing inquiry has also delayed Leonard’s proposed move to the Toronto Raptors while the potential consequences are assessed.

The Clippers have denied wrongdoing, maintaining that connecting players with team sponsors is normal practice and that the organization did not negotiate or control Leonard’s endorsement agreements.

The investigation began after allegations surrounding Leonard’s reported $28 million endorsement agreement with Aspiration, a company in which Ballmer had invested. The NBA hired the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz to examine the allegations, and the two sides are now discussing the league’s preliminary findings.
