The NBA has confirmed that the iconic Larry O’Brien Trophy logo will return to centre court for the upcoming Finals series, marking a revival of traditional championship branding after several years without it. The announcement was made quietly via social media ahead of the title clash between the San Antonio Spurs and the New York Knicks.
The Finals will begin on Wednesday in San Antonio at the Frost Bank Center, where the trophy image will be painted at midcourt for all games in the series. In addition, the familiar “The Finals” script logo will also return and appear on both sides of the court, restoring a visual identity long associated with the league’s championship stage.
This will be the first time since the 2009 Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and Orlando Magic that the trophy logo appears at centre court during the championship series. The Finals branding last featured on the floor in 2014, when the Spurs faced the Miami Heat.
The league originally introduced Finals court branding in 1989, gradually evolving it over the years before prominently featuring the trophy at midcourt between 2005 and 2009. However, in recent seasons, the NBA moved away from the design, prompting fan discussions on social media about the absence of special Finals court markings.
The return of the trophy logo comes amid broader efforts by the league to enhance visual presentation for major events. The NBA has already introduced themed courts for initiatives such as the NBA Cup, and some fans had questioned the inconsistency of not extending similar treatment to the Finals.
This year’s design will include a new feature, with the trophy logo at centre court integrated alongside each home team’s branding, blending traditional championship imagery with local identity as the Spurs and Knicks compete for the title.
