Nasarawa Amazons women’s basketball team claimed their first victory at the ongoing Zenith Bank 2025 Women’s Basketball Premier League on Saturday, edging out Kada Angels 52–49 in Abuja.
The closely contested encounter was part of Phase One of the league, held at the indoor hall of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.
The Amazons took the first quarter 8–5, but Kada Angels bounced back in the second quarter, winning it 11–7.
Nasarawa regained momentum in the third quarter with a 15–14 edge, taking a slim 30–26 lead into the final period.
The fourth quarter turned into a tense battle, but the Amazons held their nerve, winning it 22–19 to seal a hard-fought 52–49 victory.
Speaking after the game, Nasarawa Amazons’ head coach, Victory Eze, expressed satisfaction with the team's performance.
“This is our first win, and I’m happy with the effort. It was a tough but rewarding game,” he said.
Eze also noted that many of the players are products of the academy’s grassroots program and that the team had to cope with injuries, sometimes fielding only five or six relatively inexperienced players.
“Our goal is to expose young talents, help them gain experience, and improve over time,” he added, stating that the team will continue learning and correcting mistakes as the league progresses.
Nasarawa Amazons will next face Plateau Rocks on Sunday at 2 p.m., while Kada Angels will take on Air Warriors at 12 p.m.
In other matches, Nigeria Customs edged Plateau Rocks 52–50, Air Warriors defeated Royal Aces 62–55, and Titans Basketball beat Ham Warriors 60–36.
Participating teams in this season’s league include Air Warriors, Titans Basketball, Kada Angels, Plateau Rocks, Royal Aces, Nasarawa Amazons, Ham Warriors, and Nigeria Customs.
The 2025 Women’s Basketball Premier League, which began on Tuesday, is scheduled to conclude on August 5 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.
