MFM March into Final 8 as Dolphins’ Title Defence Collapses

MFM Basketball Club completed a remarkable Atlantic Conference campaign unbeaten on Sunday, while defending champions Dolphins were eliminated from the 2026 Zenith Bank Women’s Basketball League.

MFM ended the regular season with a perfect 14-game record after defeating First Bank 54-48 on the final day to finish top of the conference with 28 points.

The Lagos-based side’s victory completed an emphatic campaign in which they remained unbeaten from start to finish, establishing themselves as the team to beat in the Atlantic Conference.

First Bank, despite losing their final game to MFM, secured second position with 25 points from an 11-3 record.

Victoria Queens and Bayelsa Blue Whales joined the two Lagos sides in securing the Atlantic Conference’s remaining Final 8 places.

For Dolphins, however, the conference phase brought a dramatic reversal of fortunes.

The defending champions bowed out after losing 41-39 to First Deep Water in their final game, leaving them seventh on the table with just three victories from 14 matches.

Dolphins lost 11 games during the conference campaign, a sharp contrast to the consistency that carried them to the league title previously.

Their failure to qualify means the Final 8 will have a new champion, with the reigning holders unable to defend their crown.

On the final day, Victoria Queens were awarded a 20-0 victory over Bayelsa Blue Whales, while Royal Aces defeated IGP Queens 47-42.

MFM will now turn their attention to the Final 8, where they will face a tougher test against teams from the Savannah Conference, including Air Warriors, who finished fourth.

Nigeria Customs emerged as the dominant force in the Savannah Conference, completing their 10 matches without defeat.

ASO Sky Queens finished second with seven wins, while Titans and Air Warriors took the other two qualifying places with five victories each.

The Final 8 therefore presents MFM with a fresh challenge as they attempt to carry their perfect conference record into the decisive stage and convert an unbeaten regular-season run into the ultimate league prize.
