MFM Basketball Club have intensified their pursuit of a clean sweep of domestic honours after continuing their impressive run in the Zenith Bank Women’s Premier League.
The Lagos-based side underlined their dominance on Wednesday with a commanding 77–21 victory over Bayelsa Blue Whales in the opening game of the day at the Basketball Stadium, Port Harcourt.
The 56-point victory further enhanced MFM’s confidence as the team targets an unbeaten season across all competitions.
Head Coach Akinwonjowo Oladele said the team’s remarkable consistency had been built on hard work, discipline and the players’ determination to maintain high standards throughout the campaign.
“The secret to our outstanding performances, day in day out, is putting in hard work and remaining consistent,” Oladele said.
He added that MFM’s ambitions extended beyond the Zenith League, with the club also targeting the Louis Edem Trophy and MFM Championship.
“Our mission is to go unbeaten and win all the trophies this season.
“We are on course for the Louis Edem Trophy, MFM Championship and the Zenith League, where we are about 70 per cent through. We are sure of going unbeaten this season,” he said.
Oladele believes the team’s approach has put it in a strong position to achieve its ambitious targets, but stressed that maintaining concentration would be crucial in the remaining games.
Despite his satisfaction with MFM’s performances, the coach expressed concerns about the structure of the domestic women’s league.
He observed that the league format had remained largely unchanged over the past three seasons and urged the incoming leadership of Nigerian basketball to introduce fresh ideas.
“This is how we have been going for the past three seasons. I am hoping that when the election is done and we have a new president, he can initiate new ideas for the local league,” Oladele said.
With three major domestic honours in their sights, MFM will now look to sustain their momentum and discipline as they pursue what could be a historic unbeaten campaign.
