The Memphis Grizzlies made history Monday night by sinking 29 three-pointers in a 142-126 home loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, tying the NBA single-game record. Despite the impressive shooting, Memphis could not secure a win.
Nine Grizzlies contributed from beyond the arc, with the team shooting 49.2% from three-point range (29-of-59) and 45.7% from inside the arc (16-of-35). Memphis’ reserves Adama Bal and Dariq Whitehead led the charge with six three-pointers each, while Lucas Williamson added five, and Olivier-Maxence Prosper finished 4-of-5.
The record had previously been shared by the Milwaukee Bucks, who made 29 three-pointers in a December 2020 victory over Miami, and the Boston Celtics, who matched it in an October 2024 win against the New York Knicks. However, Memphis’ 29 threes mark the most ever made in a loss in NBA history, surpassing the previous record of 27 set by the Golden State Warriors in 2024.
Coach Tuomas Iisalo praised his team’s effort, saying, "I think we can be pretty proud of how we played with this group today. Guys wanted to go for it, and we were all for it. Unfortunately we couldn’t set a singular record, but tied it. Nonetheless, very proud of our group."
Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson also acknowledged the Grizzlies’ shooting display, stating, "Incredible shooting performance by the Grizzlies. Give them credit. They shot the heck out of the ball."
Memphis’ scoring came in waves: 10 three-pointers in the first quarter, three in the second, six in the third, and 10 in the final period. Yet, despite their historic output from deep, the Grizzlies continue to struggle, losing 18 of their last 20 games. Prior to Monday, they had been averaging 13.7 made three-pointers per game.
